The Phoenix Convention Center, which was originally known as Phoenix Civic Plaza, is located in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, and was opened in 1972. Construction of the Center first began in 1969. Over the years there have been several expansions and some renovations, turning the Phoenix Convention Center into to magnificent and breathtaking structure that it is today.
The Phoenix Convention Center, built on about 24 acres of land, is one of the top 20 largest venues in the United States with its 2.5 million total square footage. Of these 2.5 million square feet, there is over 900,000 square feet of space for conventions, shows, sporting events, exhibitions, meetings, trade shows and more. There are many nearby parking garages for the convenience of those visiting the convention center.
The unique look of the Phoenix Convention Center was designed to express the look of Arizona's landscape and the Sonoran Desert in which Phoenix is located. This is reflected in the use of colors, materials, lighting and shapes. The Phoenix Convention Center consists of the North Building and the West Building, which are both four levels (one level is below ground), and the South Building, which has one level. The West Building is connected to the North Building by a pedestrian walkway bridge. These connections are made at the third level as well as the level below ground.
Some of the features of the Phoenix Convention Center include a Symphony Hall Auditorium, meeting rooms, lecture hall, ballrooms, exhibit halls, access to the Orpheum Theater and much more. There is state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, information technology and telecommunications services that can be used by individuals or by groups, which can be customized based on the users needs. Also, the Phoenix Convention Center is a 'green' facility and is extremely environmentally friendly. They use solar panels to help with energy and they have a great recycling program. With their recycling program the convention center has been able to recycle over 500,000 tons of materials in one year. There are over 21,000 chairs in the convention center that are made from recycled seatbelts and the casings of car batteries.
